The Progress Report: February 23
Trump’s new 15% global tariff could cost Americans an extra $1,300.
THE CASE
After the Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling striking down Trump’s illegal use of emergency tariffs, he imposed a 15% tariff on imports from across the globe for the next 150 days–leaving American consumers and businesses to foot the bill for his reckless trade war. If the 15% across the board tariff is made permanent, it would cost U.S. households an extra $1,300 on average, while Trump brags that he “won affordability.”
KEY FACTS AND DATA
Trump is raising global tariffs to 15%, even though American businesses and consumers—not other countries—paid nearly 90% of the emergency tariffs.
Experts predict that, if made permanent, Trump’s 15% global tariff would increase costs for U.S. households by $1,300 on average.

The administration effectively enacted the largest tax increase on the American people in 30 years.
Even with the Supreme Court’s ruling, Trump can’t undo all the pain he’s caused this past year. His reckless tariffs have made life more unaffordable for families who won’t get that money back.
Affordability is Trump’s greatest vulnerability. Nearly two-thirds of voters say life is less affordable than it was a year ago. Close to half of Trump voters agree. [Blue Rose Research]
Americans most associate Trump’s economic policies with tariffs–which they understand are increasing their costs. 56% disapprove of Trump’s handling of the economy and 58% disapprove of his handling of inflation and the cost of living. [Navigator Research]
Americans pay more while Trump’s tariffs fail to deliver promised gains.
Trump promised his tariffs would bring jobs back and increase U.S. exports, but the truth is that America has lost 80,000 manufacturing jobs under his tariffs and the trade deficit is at an all-time high.
Trump’s new tariffs also hurt U.S. allies and help rivals. Many countries are now pursuing bilateral trade deals that exclude the American market.
